What is Music Generation?

Imagine if every child and young person in Ireland could grow up as part of a community where they could experience inclusion, creativity, diversity and empowerment through music.
Music Generation is a national partnership programme whose mission is to create inspiring experiences for children and young people through music. Together, the team at Music Generation strives to transform children and young people’s lives by giving them opportunities to create, play and perform music in their own communities and on their own terms.

Initiated by its parent company, Music Network, Music Generation is now Ireland’s national music education programme, co-funded by U2, The Ireland Funds, the Department of Education and Skills and Local Music Education Partnerships.

“What we want to do is really simple. We just want to make sure that everyone, whatever their background, gets access to music tuition. That’s the idea.”
– Bono, U2

Music Generation works to break down the barriers that may otherwise prevent children and young people from experiencing the pure joy of making music. Music Generation believes in the power of music to build confidence and creativity, to nurture leadership and innovation, to promote self-expression, connection and happiness. want all children and young people to have the opportunity to realise that potential, regardless of circumstance.

The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child sets out the basic human rights to which every child is entitled. One such right is the right to participate. This includes the right to express opinions and take part in social and cultural activities. Music Generation believes in every child and young person’s musical and artistic potential.
